Apperance · Emerald green eyes, Aeris has long, auburn hair. It's ending tips ended along her hips. Her skin is fair.

Personality · Aeris is a friendly, upbeat and cheerful young woman, and often seems a rather simplistic character. Throughout the game, however, she reveals the deeper aspects of her personality (and its temper), displaying her complexities. She is constantly mindful of the fate of the Planet, and concerns herself with issues dealing with her heritage as the sole survivor of the Cetra.

Despite her feelings of loneliness as the last of her race, Aeris puts on a positive and optimistic front. Though she is physically weak, she displays emotional strength, especially in carrying the responsibility of saving the Planet. Despite the dangers she has faced her whole life not only as an object of Shin-Ra's greed, but also from the dangers of growing up in the slums, she gives hope, support and encouragement to her friends. She also shows her bravery and strength when she decides to handle Sephiroth on her own.

Elmyra tells Cloud of Aeris' stubborn determination and habit of stating what’s on her mind, and, indeed, once her mind is made up, it is hard to change it. She also tends to be a bit frank, but always tries to add joy to life and displays a stark understanding of others. This was exemplified in Advent Children, when she told Cloud that he should seek forgiveness from himself instead of her.

Aeris often puts on a naïve persona, but in reality, is a wise and understanding person who knows what’s going on with the Planet and its people—healing people and giving them encouragement and hope even after her death.

Seal Evil ~ Aeris casts a mystic spell on a group of enemies. The enemy are showered with purple sparks, causing them all to stop and become silenced.

Breath of the Earth ~ Magical beams of light trails and surround the party, curing status aliments of any existing negative statuses.

Fury Brand ~ Sacrificing her own Limit Attack, Aeris blasts the party with Holy power, in a form of lightning, which instantly fills each of her allies' Limit gauges.

Planet Protector ~ Aeris forms a protective with stars barrier around the party that makes them temporarily invulnerable.

Pulse of Life ~ With a quick word of prayer, Aeris completely cures the party of any ailments and restores any lost Hit Points or Magic Points.

Great Gospel ~ Aeris prays in a shaft of holy light, fully healing them and granting them invincibility for a while.

Memories · Aeris was the daughter of Ifalna, the last true Cetra, and Ifalna's experimentor: Professor Gast. She was born, like Sephiroth, out of the relationship between a scientist and his subject, but, unlike Sephiroth, a reciprocal and loving relationship. Ifalna and Gast met when Ifalna was captured by the ShinRa and taken to be experimented on by Gast, who was, at the time, their most celebrated scientist. The two fell in love and eloped, although Gast never ceased his personal study of the Cetra, allowing, through his interviews, Ifalna to reach some kind of acceptance of the things that had befallen her race. A baby girl was born to the pair: Aeris Gainsborough.

While Aeris was a very small baby, her family was broken up by an attack by Professor Hojo, determined to recapture his lost specimens. Gast was killed in the attack, but Ifalna and Aeris were taken back to Midgar alive. It seems that their first successful escape attempt occured when Aeris was around seven years old. Ifalna was injured in the escape, however, and died at the Sector 7 station where Elmyra, Aeris' foster-mother, was entrusted with the little girl at the last request of her dying mother. The childless Elmyra, soon to be widowed, took Aeris in and brought her up as her own child. She was aware that Aeris had special powers, but never let the little girl know this, as Aeris tried so hard to hide it.

Soon, the ShinRa began to attempt recapture of Aeris. Tseng of the Turks appears to have been in charge of her recovery. Rather than taking her forcefully, it seems that he originally attempted to persuade Aeris to go back with him to ShinRa Headquarters. Although Tseng was attempting to take her somewhere she did not want to go, Aeris came to feel that he was one of a very few people who knew her, having been ever present as she grew up.

At around sixteen, Aeris met and fell in love with a dashing SOLDIER, Zack. Zack was outgoing, confident and a ladies' man: Aeris confessed that he was her first love and that he meant a lot to her. His memory becomes important as the game goes on, although during the game itself Aeris never indicates whether she is still in love with him or not. Eventually, Zack disappeared on a mission and Aeris never heard from him again: she did not know he was dead, although they meet again after her death in official novella The Maiden, in which Aeris makes it clear that she no longer loves Zack, although he means a great deal to her.

Continually on the run from the ShinRa, Aeris meets Cloud selling flowers in Midgar.
